Art and design

Intent

‘Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.’ National Curriculum 2016

At Worple through the art and design curriculum we aim to:

  • Nurture children’s natural sense of wonder and curiosity, while teaching skills and    developing personal style.
  • Foster and develop children’s creativity,
  • Inspire and equip them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.
  • Challenge children to have the confidence to try and explore new things.

Implement

The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design curriculum at Worple is a project based approach using Cornerstones Maestro to plan and deliver high quality and carefully pitched lessons.

The art and design projects are well sequenced to provide a coherent subject scheme that develops children’s skills and knowledge of visual elements, art forms, artists and art movements. Projects are placed alongside other subject projects where there are opportunities for making meaningful connections.

Plentiful opportunities are provided for children to explore primary and secondary colours, study a comprehensive range of artists, and explore complex techniques such as printmaking, drawing, printing and sculpture.

Children have the opportunity to reflect and develop, including through the use of sketchbooks and chances for self and peer-assessment into each unit of study in ks1 and ks2. Art projects are often linked to a class topic theme to enhance the pupils’ understanding of they key historical and geographical concepts concept covered.

Impact

Our art and design curriculum will lead pupil to be enthusiastic art and design learners, evidenced in a range of ways such as their sketchbooks or pupil’s voice. Children will become more confident in analysing their work and giving their opinion on their own and others work of art.

Children in Foundation Stage are assessed within Expressive Arts and Design and their progress is tracked termly using the 2Simple tracker system. Age related expectation levels are reported to parents at the end of the reception year.

Design and Technology

Intent

‘Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.’ National Curriculum 2016

At Worple through the art and design curriculum we aim to:

  • Encourage children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems, both as individuals and as members of a team.
  • Encourage children to use their imagination.
  • Encourage children to become problem solvers who can work creatively on shared projects.
  • Provides children with opportunities to research, represent their ideas, explore and investigate, develop their ideas, make a products and evaluate their work.

Implement

The teaching and implementation of the Design and Technology curriculum at Worple is a project based approach using Cornerstones Maestro to plan and deliver high quality and carefully pitched lessons.

Each project follows the engage, develop, innovate, and express structure. Each lesson is based around a design and technology focus of structures, mechanisms, cooking and nutrition or textiles.  During the Develop stage the focus is on practical skills so children gain the knowledge and the skills needed to complete their Innovate task independently.

KS1 children will learn about structures and mechanism and assemble and test the wheels and axels, they will also learn about food sources and use simple techniques to create a supermarket sandwich. They will develop their understanding of textiles, learning to sew a simple running stitch using pattern pieces and add simple embellishment.

KS2 children continue to learn about food, understanding the concept of a balanced diet and making healthy meals, they will also develop their knowledge of structure using triangles and braces for strength. They will explore and use electrical systems and IT and will use their knowledge to create lifting or moving device prototype.

Impact

Through Design and Technology our children learn to take risks, become resourceful, innovative and enterprising individuals. Children learn to be passionate and excited by the designing and making of products including working with a variety of materials and also preparing and tasting food. Learning is assessed through the analysis of the pupil’s ability to evaluate, design, make and improve their own work. Children will get more confidence in follow a design, make evaluate process to meet a goal.
